Description

BOOK SPECIMEN – This specimen will be in our next Field Guide to Topaz Mountain. Red Beryl & Bixbyite – Location: Thomas Range (Topaz Mountain), Juab Co., Utah. Thumbnail (see photo for more details). When it comes to red beryl, Utah is the “place”. Red beryl was first discovered and described by Maynard Bixby from the Thomas Range (type locality) in the late 1890s. By the way, Maynard Bixby also first discovered and described bixbyite from this same locale. Here we have a very rare combination of these two rare and unusual minerals. We collected this very unique specimen from one of the many claims that we own and operate in the Thomas Range. First let me just say that the combination of these two minerals (on the same specimen) is extremely rare. The color is a raspberry pink color and very gemmy. There are some small bixbyite cubes (unmodified) growing on the surface of the red beryl.
