Rare Cassiterite (Nodular ‘Wood-tin’), & Hematite – Location: Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah. Small Cabinet (see photo for more details). Here we have a very rare combination specimen of nodular cassiterite (known as ‘wood-tin’), with hematite from the famous Thomas Range in Utah. The material formed in a fumarolic vent in rhyolite. This specimen is a very rare piece. The cassiterite (tin oxide mineral) formed first as multiple layered mammilary growths of dark red colored nodular cassiterite along with some black colored specular hematite crystals. This specimen is from the John Holfert collection.
